Brockhole on Windermere

The National Park Visitor Centre at Brockhole sits right on Windermere's shore, and it's genuinely one of the best ways to get your bearings if you've just arrived in the Lake District. The Victorian mansion itself is handsome enough - all Victorian solidity overlooking the water - but you're really here for the grounds and what they tell you about the landscape you're about to explore.

Inside, the exhibits are solid rather than spectacular. You'll find information about the fell walks, the geology, wildlife, and local history laid out clearly without the po-faced reverence some visitor centres manage. The real draw is stepping outside. There's a proper lake frontage where you can actually get close to the water, and the grounds are big enough that you won't feel cramped even on a busy Saturday. Kids will burn off energy on the lawns; walkers will appreciate the immediate access to trails that head up into the fells.

The place works brilliantly as a base camp before tackling Windermere itself - you can hire boats from the jetty, or simply grab a coffee and work out your next move. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through. It's free to wander the grounds, though there's a charge for the visitor centre proper if you want the full exhibition.

Staying nearby? White Cross Bay is barely half a mile away, or Low Wray Campsite if you want something smaller. Either makes Brockhole an easy morning stop before heading into the hills proper.
