Coalcraogy Hill

The walk up Coalcraogy Hill rewards you with proper views across Perthshire - on a clear day you can see right across to the Sidlaws and beyond. It's not a dramatic peak, but it's a decent outing from Perth, the climb manageable enough for families who don't mind a bit of effort without it turning into an Alpine expedition.

The hill itself is moorland and woodland, nothing fancy, but the path is straightforward enough and the wider landscape rewards you for getting up there. Most people allow a couple of hours for the round trip, depending on fitness. It's the sort of walk that works best in autumn or winter when the light's sharper and you're not melting in the climb.

This is one for walkers and anyone who enjoys proper Perthshire countryside without the crowds you'd hit at somewhere like Schiehallon. Not a technical climb - you don't need special kit - but decent boots and weather awareness matter. If you're based at Greenhill Farm Glamping or Maycroft Retreat, both within a couple of miles, it makes a solid morning walk before heading into Perth for lunch.

Families with teenagers will get on with it fine. Younger kids might find the moorland a bit dull unless they're proper outdoors types. There's nothing on the hill itself - no cafe, no visitor centre - so bring water and maybe a snack. Free to access, of course. Time it right and the views make it well worth the trek.
