Cruach na Cioba

The walk up Cruach na Cioba takes you from Cairndow into proper hill country, and it's the sort of ascent that feels manageable until you're halfway up realising how exposed the ridge gets. Walkers of moderate fitness will manage it without drama, though allow a solid three hours to do it properly and not rush back down. The terrain's rough in patches and the weather can change quickly, so it's not the sort of outing for a casual stroll. Families with older children who don't mind muddy boots will get something out of it, but younger ones might find it a bit of a slog.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Stucreoch Caravan Park is just up the road and highly rated - this makes a proper half-day adventure without needing to travel far. Drimsynie Holiday Village is another option if you're after more facilities. It's a genuinely quiet spot, which means you won't be jostling with crowds, but also that you need to be properly prepared. No facilities on the hill itself, so bring water and something to eat. Worth doing if you're the type who likes being outdoors in Scottish hills rather than ticking off famous names.
