Great Calva

Great Calva rises to 2,416 feet and punches well above its weight as a Lake District fell. The walk up isn't technical - you're looking at a solid three to four hours return from Keswick - but it's relentless enough that you'll feel you've earned the views. The ascent follows the ridge north from Skiddaw, which means you're walking along proper fell terrain rather than grinding up a featureless slope. On clear days the panorama is genuinely superb: you get Blencathra's dramatic ridge to the east, the Helvellyn range stretching south, and west across to the Solway Firth on a decent visibility day.

This is a walker's fell rather than a casual stroll destination. Families with teenagers who've done a few hills will manage it fine, but young children will find it long and sapping. The ground underfoot is mostly grass and loose scree near the summit - wear decent boots and give yourself extra time if the weather's iffy. There's no entry fee and no facilities at the top, so bring water and a packed lunch. Summer's the obvious choice, though autumn gives you clearer air and fewer midges.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Kestrel Lodge is closest at just over three miles from Keswick - Great Calva makes for a proper day out. It's the sort of fell that rewards effort without being unnecessarily grim. Not as famous as Skiddaw or Helvellyn, which actually works in its favour: you won't be queuing at the summit.
