Latrigg

Standing at just 1,203 feet, this modest fell offers one of the finest introductions to Lake District walking you'll find. The path from Keswick town centre winds steadily upward through woodland before emerging onto open moorland, with spectacular views unfolding at every turn.

Families with young children will love this one - it's a proper mountain experience without the leg-burning slog of the higher peaks. The summit rewards you with a cracking panorama across Keswick to Derwentwater, with the imposing bulk of Skiddaw looming behind. On clear days, you can pick out most of the major peaks from here.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the top taking photos. The route is well-marked and never too steep, though it can get muddy after rain. Early morning visits often reward you with mist rolling off the lake below.

This makes a brilliant warm-up walk if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Castlerigg Hall or Keswick Camping. It's close enough to Keswick that you could easily combine it with a wander round the town's outdoor shops and cafes. Perfect for testing the legs before tackling something more ambitious like Helvellyn or Scafell Pike later in your holiday.
