Great Cockup

The name alone gets a laugh, but Great Cockup is a proper fell that demands respect. This 2,047-metre peak sits north of Keswick and offers one of the Lake District's most satisfying walks without requiring the crowds or the full day commitment of Helvellyn or Scafell Pike.

You'll approach from Caldbeck or via the Skiddaw massif, and the ascent is steep in places but manageable for anyone with decent fitness. The views from the top sweep across the Northern Fells towards Scotland on a clear day - you can pick out Cross Fell and the Pennines. On the way up you'll pass through moorland and fell grass, with the terrain becoming rockier as you gain height. Allow three to four hours for a solid round trip.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination for families with young children or anyone after a gentle afternoon stroll - the upper sections demand concentration and decent boots. The fell can get boggy lower down after rain, so timing matters.

There's no entrance fee or facilities on the mountain itself. If you're camping nearby - and there's decent choice with Kestrel Lodge just 1.8 miles away, or Caldbeck Camping at 5.2 miles - this makes for a cracking morning walk before settling back at the site. It fits well with exploring the wider Skiddaw range, or as a less-trodden alternative if you're based at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club for the week.
