Longlands Fell

The walk up Longlands Fell rewards you with proper Lakeland views without the crowds you'd battle on Skiddaw. It's a straightforward fell that sits just north of Keswick, manageable for fit walkers but steep enough to feel like actual exercise. The summit isn't dramatic - there's no dramatic cairn or shelter, just open moorland and the sense that you've earned the panorama sweeping out across the northern lakes. From the top, Bassenthwaite Lake spreads below you like a dark mirror, and on clear days you can pick out half the peaks in the park. The ascent takes around 90 minutes from the valley, and most people allow three hours for the round trip without rushing. It's the sort of fell that works brilliantly as a morning hike before lunch, rather than an all-day expedition. Families with older kids will manage it fine - younger ones might find the relentless climb tedious, though. There's no admission fee because it's open access fell, which is one of the proper beauties of walking in the Lake District. If you're staying at Kestrel Lodge Campsite or any of the other parks clustered around Keswick, Longlands makes an excellent leg-stretcher without demanding you drive more than twenty minutes. It's not spectacular enough to plan a trip around solely, but it's exactly the sort of walk that makes a camping holiday in Cumbria actually memorable - proper mountain air, genuine effort, proper reward.
