Inverdunning

The Roman fort at Inverdunning sits quietly on the edge of Perth, easy to miss if you're not actively looking for it. This was a proper strategic post along the Gask Ridge, part of the defensive line the Romans threw up across Scotland around 80 AD. What you're actually looking at is earthworks - low banks and ditches that form the outline of the fort's defences. It's not dramatic stuff, and you won't find standing stones or reconstructed gates here, just the landscape itself telling the story of occupation and withdrawal.

Archaeology buffs will get genuine pleasure from reading the remains, spotting the ditch systems and picking out where the barracks would have stood. Families might find it a bit underwhelming after ten minutes - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards worth mentioning, just the site itself. That said, it's free to visit and makes a straightforward stop if you're touring Roman sites across Tayside.

The location works well for caravan holidays based at Broadslap Farm or Perth Caravan Park, both within easy striking distance. Spring or autumn are best - you can actually see the earthworks then rather than wading through summer grass. Allow 30 minutes unless you're genuinely into fort archaeology, in which case bring an ordnance survey map and settle in for the afternoon. Worth a detour if Roman history pulls you in, but don't expect anything showy.
