Kincladie Wood Roman camp

Walking through Kincladie Wood near Perth, you're treading on ground that Roman soldiers once marched across nearly two thousand years ago. This archaeological site preserves the remains of a Roman camp - earthworks, ditches, and ramparts that are still visible if you know what you're looking for. It's not dramatic, and there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so you'll need either a decent guidebook or a real interest in Roman Scotland to get much from it.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. The camp itself tells a story about Roman military strategy in northern Britain, and standing where legionaries once stood does something to your imagination, even if the landscape looks fairly ordinary now. Kids under ten might struggle - there's no "wow" factor, just grassy bumps and overgrown ditches. Walkers will appreciate it more as a destination on a country ramble than as a standalone visit.

Access is straightforward and free - it's accessible land with no formal entry requirements. Allow an hour if you're making a proper job of it, longer if you're combining it with other walks in the area. The nearby caravan parks at Broadslap Farm and Greenhill Farm make decent bases if you're spending a few days exploring Perthshire's Roman heritage and countryside. Best visited in dry conditions when the ground is firm and the earthworks easier to make out. It's the sort of place that rewards patience and curiosity rather than casual passing trade.
