Lunsty Howe

The walk up Loughrigg Fell from Windermere rewards you with something you won't get from the bigger Lake District peaks - a proper vantage point without the crowds. Lunsty Howe sits on this fell's slopes, and it's the kind of spot that takes about twenty minutes from the car park if you're not dawdling, though most people spend longer just standing around taking it in.

From up here, Windermere spreads out below like someone's spilled a long glass of water across green fields. On a clear day you can see across to the Coniston fells. The fell itself is low enough that families with older kids won't struggle, but it's steep enough in places to keep things interesting. Bring proper boots - it gets boggy and the grass can be slick after rain.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Limefitt Holiday Park or the Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site, both within a few miles. You can knock it out before lunch and still have the afternoon free for the lake itself. It's free to access, and there's no entrance fee nonsense. The real trade-off is that there's no café at the top, so bring a flask if you want to linger.

For serious fell walkers, it's a bit of a warm-up. For families wanting a taste of the fells without committing to a six-hour slog up Helvellyn, it's spot on. Just don't expect solitude on a weekend in summer.
