Sour Howes

Two gentle slopes rise from the valley floor near Troutbeck, offering one of the easier Lake District summits for families with young children. Sour Howes barely qualifies as a proper fell at just 483 metres, but that's precisely its appeal - you get decent views across Windermere without the lung-busting climb that comes with the bigger peaks.

The walk up from Troutbeck takes about an hour each way, following clear paths through bracken and scattered trees. Nothing too challenging here, though it does get a bit muddy after rain. Kids will manage it fine, and the twin summits give them something to aim for.

From the top, you'll see Windermere stretching south and the Langdale Pikes rising dramatically to the west. It's a proper Lake District view without the crowds you'd find on Loughrigg or Cat Bells. Worth doing if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Windermere and want a gentle introduction to fell walking.

Best tackled on a clear day when the views actually count for something. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - just grassy slopes and a small cairn - but it's the perfect warm-up walk before attempting something more serious like Helvellyn.
