Muckle Rig

Muckle Rig isn't the kind of peak that'll take your breath away with dramatic views - but that's rather the point. This modest Perthshire hill sits just outside Perth and offers a proper straightforward walk without the crowds you'd get on Ben Lomond or similar proper mountains. The summit itself is unremarkable in the flat-top sense, but the walk up gets you out into genuine countryside and away from the A9.

It's a solid choice for families wanting to bag something without committing to a full day expedition, or for anyone based at Greenhill Farm Glamping or one of the other parks clustered within five miles of Perth. The walk itself takes around an hour or so to the summit depending on your route and fitness - nothing that'll wreck the kids, and you've got enough of a climb to feel like you've actually done something. The views back towards Perth and across the Tay valley are pleasant rather than spectacular, but they're worth having climbed for.

This is the sort of hill you'd squeeze in alongside other Perthshire attractions rather than making it a destination by itself. If you're based at Maycroft Retreat or Alexander House for a week, Muckle Rig makes a good afternoon outing when you want to move around but aren't up for tackling anything serious. No facilities at the summit, so take water and something to eat if you're planning to linger. Best in decent weather - nothing special to see if it's clogged with cloud.
