Post Knott

Climbing to this elevated spot above Windermere rewards you with sweeping views across England's largest natural lake. Post Knott sits on the eastern shore, offering a different perspective from the more crowded western viewpoints that most tourists flock to. The walk up takes about 20 minutes from the nearest parking, following a well-marked but fairly steep path through mixed woodland.

Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, though it's probably too challenging for pushchairs or very little ones. The reward at the top is a proper panoramic vista - on clear days you can pick out the fells stretching north towards Ambleside and south towards Newby Bridge. Early morning visits work best, before the lake fills with boats and the light gets too harsh.

This makes a cracking addition to a Lake District holiday, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Fallbarrow or White Cross Bay. It's close enough for an evening stroll after dinner, and you'll likely have the viewpoint largely to yourself compared to the busier spots around Bowness. The path can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are worth bringing. Allow an hour return trip, plus time to actually enjoy the view once you're up there.
