St Catherine, Grandston

The church sits quietly in the hamlet of Grandston, a short drive south of Haverfordwest, looking much as it must have done centuries ago. St Catherine is a proper rural Welsh church - the kind you stumble upon rather than plan for - with sturdy stone walls and the sort of peaceful churchyard that makes you slow down without meaning to.

Inside, it's intimate rather than grand. Medieval features survive, though like many parish churches in this part of Pembrokeshire, it's been worked over by various centuries. The real appeal isn't architectural pyrotechnics; it's the quietness and the sense that you've found something ordinary and genuine rather than polished for visitors.

Historically minded types will get something from it. Families with young children might find twenty minutes sufficient - there's not a great deal to occupy them, and the churchyard, whilst pleasant, isn't vast. It works best as a pause on a wider route through rural Pembrokeshire rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at one of the nearby camping spots - Preseli Glamping is barely a mile away, or Trellyn Woodland a bit further - it's an easy walk or short drive. Pair it with a proper explore of the lanes around Haverfordwest or a longer ramble across the Preseli Hills, and it sits naturally into a day. Free to visit, as far as anyone can establish, and open at all reasonable hours. Don't expect facilities or signage beyond what's already there.
