Market Rasen

Race days transform this small Lincolnshire market town into something entirely different. Market Rasen Racecourse brings the crowds, but most of the time this is a quiet, agricultural place that feels properly rural despite being just 15 miles northeast of Lincoln. The high street has a few independent shops and cafes, though it's fairly sleepy midweek.

Walking is the main draw here. You're right in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds, with rolling hills and ancient woodlands in every direction. Long Wood and Manor Wood offer proper rambles through mixed deciduous forest, while the smaller plantations like Water Lane and Holton provide shorter loops. The area around Drabbles Hill gives cracking views across the wolds - it's a bit of a climb but well worth it on a clear day.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A46 runs past town, connecting to Lincoln in the south and the M180 to the north. There's a railway station with direct trains to Lincoln and Sheffield, though services aren't frequent.

Staying at one of the local parks makes perfect sense for exploring the wider Lincolnshire Wolds. You've got easy access to Red House for a dose of history, plus miles of footpaths through the surrounding countryside. The Lindsey Trail passes nearby, offering longer distance walking, while the various woodland areas provide shelter on blustery days. It's peaceful country walking at its best, without the crowds you'd find in more famous national parks.
