Barkbooth Lot CWT Reserve

The CWT Reserve at Barkbooth Lot sits just outside Windermere, a proper slice of Lake District countryside that most visitors miss entirely. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction - think ancient woodland, open fell, and the kind of rough grassland where you actually spot curlews and red grouse if you're lucky. The reserve is managed for conservation, so what you get is genuine habitat rather than a visitor experience bolted on afterwards.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're after a gentle stroll with information boards and a café, look elsewhere. But if you want to hike through actual unspoiled terrain without the crowds that clog Catbells or Helvellyn, you'll find it here. The paths wind through mixed woodland and open moorland - it's the kind of place where the wind sounds like it means something.
