Lambhowe Plantation

Dense conifer stands climb steeply up the fellside above Windermere, offering a proper woodland walk that's surprisingly peaceful despite being so close to the lakes. Lambhowe Plantation is working forestry rather than manicured parkland, so expect muddy paths, fallen branches and the occasional glimpse of red squirrels darting between the Scots pines.

Walkers looking for a bit of solitude will appreciate the network of forest tracks that wind through different aged sections of trees. The younger plantings feel almost cathedral-like on misty mornings, while the mature areas open up into proper clearings with views back down to the valley. It's not spectacular viewing by Lake District standards, but it's a cracking spot for a morning stomp when the tourist trails around Windermere get too busy.

Families might find the terrain a bit challenging for small children - the paths can be steep and uneven, and there's nothing particularly exciting to hold young attention for long. Serious hikers and dog walkers get much more from it, especially as a warm-up before tackling the bigger fells nearby.

Perfectly placed for those staying at any of the holiday parks around Windermere, including Park Cliffe or Hill of Oaks. The plantation makes a decent hour-long diversion when the weather's not quite right for the lakefront but you still fancy getting outdoors.
