Undermillbeck Common

The walk up Undermillbeck Common from near Windermere is straightforward and rewards you with proper fell views without the grind of some of the bigger Lake District peaks. It's not dramatic - no dramatic rock formations or knife-edge ridges - but that's rather the point. The common itself is open moorland with heather and rough grass, the sort of place where you can actually see what you're doing and think clearly.

On a decent day the view across to the Helvellyn range is solid, and you get a real sense of being properly on the fell rather than trudging up a tourist trail. The walk takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and where exactly you aim for - there's no single defined summit, which some find frustrating and others prefer. Families with reasonable walkers will manage it fine; younger kids might find the exposed moorland less interesting than a more dramatic peak with obvious features to aim for.

Stay at one of the nearby glamping spots like Lakeland Glamping or Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site and you're perfectly placed. It's a morning outing rather than an all-day expedition, which frees up your afternoon for Windermere town itself or heading to other parks in the area.

Go in reasonable weather. On a grey, damp day it feels a bit bleak rather than peaceful. But in sunshine, with the fells clear, it's exactly what the Lakes should be - honest fell walking without the crowds.
