Cat Crag

Cat Crag sits just above Windermere, a modest fell that punches well above its weight for anyone after a proper walk without needing a full day's commitment. The summit's only 481 metres, but the views south towards the lake and across to the Langdale Pikes make it feel much more significant than the height suggests.

You'll find the ascent straightforward from the northern side - most walkers tackle it in under two hours return, making it ideal for families who've had enough of rainy-day attractions. The fell's open moorland keeps the sun on your face, and on a clear day you genuinely see why people get obsessed with this corner of England. Midges can be murder in summer though, so pick your weather.

The approach from Windermere itself involves a bit of road walking initially, which feels dull, but once you're on the fell proper it's all good. No fees, no gates, no nonsense - this is proper fell walking. The terrain's boggy in places after rain, so decent boots matter more than you'd think for something this height.

If you're staying at Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Damson View Glamping nearby, Cat Crag works brilliantly as a morning mission before hitting other Lake District classics. It's the sort of walk that clears your head without exhausting everyone in the party. Worth the short drive from Windermere town centre, especially if you're avoiding the crowded honey-pot peaks.
