Capple Barrow

Getting to the summit of this modest Lake District fell requires a proper climb through woodland and open fell, but the reward at the top makes every step worthwhile. The views across Windermere and the central fells are absolutely cracking - you can pick out the major peaks stretching north towards Helvellyn and the Langdale Pikes without the crowds that plague the more famous viewpoints.

Walkers with a decent level of fitness will get the most from Capple Barrow. It's not a mountain by any stretch, but the ascent is steep enough to get the heart pumping and the paths can be muddy after rain. Families with older children who are used to fell walking will manage it fine, though anyone expecting a gentle stroll might find themselves out of breath.

Allow around two to three hours for the round trip from Windermere, depending on how long you spend admiring the panorama at the top. Early morning visits often reward you with clearer air and better photographic light, plus you'll avoid the afternoon heat in summer.

Staying at one of the holiday parks near Windermere makes this an excellent half-day adventure. Fallbarrow Holiday Park and White Cross Bay are both within easy driving distance, while Park Cliffe offers a good base if you're planning several Lake District walks during your stay.
