Scott Howe

A modest fell south of Windermere, Scott Howe offers one of those rewarding climbs that proves bigger isn't always better. The summit sits at just 312 metres, making it perfectly achievable for families with older children or anyone wanting a proper Lake District walk without the full mountain commitment.

From the top, you get lovely views across Windermere and the surrounding fells - not spectacular perhaps, but satisfying enough after the steady ascent through mixed woodland and open fellside. The route up takes about an hour from the nearest parking, following well-marked paths that can get muddy after rain.

Walkers staying at nearby Park Cliffe or Fallbarrow Holiday Park will find this an excellent introduction to Lakeland fell walking. It's free to access like all the fells, though you'll need to sort parking which can be tricky in summer. Early morning or late afternoon visits work best to avoid the crowds heading to the more famous peaks.

Kids who are used to longer walks will manage fine, but don't expect to keep toddlers entertained for long once you reach the top. The descent offers different route options, so you can make it into a proper circular walk if you're feeling ambitious.
