Heron Pike

Standing at 612 metres, this fell offers one of the more achievable summit walks in the central Lakes without the crowds that plague Helvellyn or Scafell Pike. The path from Rydal village climbs steadily through woodland before opening onto moorland, with the final push being a proper scramble over rocky terrain.

Families with older children will manage this well - it's about three hours return if you take your time. The views from the top stretch across Windermere to the Pennines, though honestly, nearby Fairfield gives you better panoramas for similar effort. What Heron Pike lacks in drama it makes up for in peace.
