Holme Fell

The walk up Holme Fell from Ambleside is short, sharp, and entirely rewarding - you're looking at roughly two hours there and back, making it ideal for a half-day expedition. At just 404 metres, it doesn't sound like much, but the fell offers proper views across the Langdale Valley and down towards Windermere that'll surprise you with their reach.

The route kicks off near Skelwith Bridge and climbs steadily through woodland before opening out onto moorland. The ascent is relentless rather than technical - nothing scrambling about it, just a solid grind uphill. Once you're on top, the panorama justifies the effort: you can see across to the Coniston fells and out towards Morecambe Bay on a clear day. It's the sort of place where an hour at the summit feels earned.

Family groups with older kids will manage it comfortably, though younger ones might flag on the steeper sections. Walkers doing a longer Lake District trip will find Holme Fell a useful warm-up or recovery day - it doesn't dominate your schedule the way longer peaks do.

Stay nearby at Skelwith Fold Caravan Park or BaysBrown Farm Campsite, both within three miles, and you're well-positioned for this and a string of longer walks in Great Langdale. Free to access, naturally. Go early to avoid the foot traffic, particularly at weekends. The best window is May through September, though it's manageable year-round if you've got decent boots and check the weather beforehand.
