Man Scar

Standing at 1,844 feet above sea level, this lesser-known Lakeland fell offers spectacular views across Windermere and the surrounding valleys without the crowds that plague more famous peaks. The summit rewards you with panoramic vistas stretching from the Coniston Fells to the Helvellyn range, making the steep climb well worth the effort.

Getting to the top requires a proper walk - this isn't one for flip-flops or pushchairs. Most walkers tackle it as part of a longer ridge walk from nearby Loughrigg Fell or as a standalone hike from Ambleside. The terrain can be boggy in places, especially after rain, so decent boots are essential.

Fell walkers and photographers will get the most from Man Scar. The relatively quiet nature of this peak means you're likely to have the summit largely to yourself, particularly on weekdays. Families with older children who enjoy a challenge will find it manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient.

Allow around three hours for the round trip from Ambleside, depending on your route and fitness level. The view from the top makes an excellent lunch spot if you've packed a sandwich.
