Little Cockup

The name alone gets a laugh, but Little Cockup is a proper fell walk in its own right, sitting just north of Keswick in the Lake District. At 1,706 feet, it's not a massive peak - you're looking at a straightforward two to three hour round trip from most starting points - but the views across the northern fells are genuinely worth the leg work. The ascent from Caldbeck side is the most popular route, and it's steep enough to feel like proper exercise without being brutal. On a clear day you'll see across to Skiddaw and Blencathra; on a grey one, you get the moody fell atmosphere that makes the Lakes so addictive. Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of a slog will manage it fine, though younger children might find the return journey tedious. The fell itself is open access, so it's free to visit any time. There's no café at the summit - just grass, stones, and a decent bit of solitude compared to the honeypot peaks. If you're camping at Caldbeck Camping or Carrock Glamping Pods, you're genuinely close enough to make this a morning's work before lunch. Even from Skiddaw View Holiday Park near Keswick, it's worth the short drive to reach the trailhead. Go early to dodge the crowds, and don't expect facilities - bring water and a packed snack. It's the sort of walk that doesn't demand Instagram-worthy views to justify itself; just a good honest fell day.
