St Peter's Church

St Peter's Church sits in Hexham like a proper piece of the county's backbone. This is medieval stonework that's actually survived - thick walls, that particular light that only comes through very old stained glass, the kind of place where you can practically feel the centuries pressing down on the pews.

It's a working church, so you're not visiting some frozen museum piece. Hexham itself is proper useful as a base. It's got decent facilities, proper shops, and decent pubs - the kind of market town that actually functions rather than just exists for tourists. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots or caravan parks within a few miles - Wild Northumbrian Tipis is barely four miles away, and there's Kielder Waterside just as close - you could easily make St Peter's part of a broader exploration of the area. Combine it with a walk along the river or a visit to Hexham Abbey if you're in the mood for more ecclesiastical architecture.

Free to visit, no nonsense about it. Go when you're passing through town rather than making a special pilgrimage - though if medieval churches are your thing, it's well worth the detour.
