The Blue Gallery

Art galleries tucked away in Lake District villages don't usually announce themselves loudly, and The Blue Gallery in Colthouse is no exception. This is a proper working space - the kind of place where you might catch artists actually making things rather than just displaying finished work behind glass. The gallery showcases contemporary art with a regional focus, and the quality of what's on the walls tends to be genuinely interesting rather than the tourist-trap stuff you find elsewhere in the Lakes.

Colthouse itself sits just outside the main Windermere honeypot, which means you get the landscape without quite so many screaming families. It's walking country - genuinely good walking country - so the gallery works best as a rainy-day detour rather than a destination in itself. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're keen on contemporary work and fancy chatting with whoever's minding the space.

The nearest campsite is Low Wray, only 2.3 miles away, which puts you perfectly positioned for combining gallery visits with proper fell walks. Skelwith Fold and the Parkdean sites at Fallbarrow and White Cross Bay are all within three miles if you're after a bit more infrastructure. Bring waterproofs - this is the Lake District, and the weather doesn't care about opening times.

Worth ringing ahead to check what's showing and whether they're actually open, as smaller galleries can have erratic hours. The fact it exists at all in a village this size says something worth discovering yourself rather than me spoiling it.
