Twenty-seven natural springs bubble up from the limestone beneath this Georgian spa town, creating Britain's highest market town at 1,000 feet above sea level. The thermal waters that made Victorian society flock here still flow today, though now you're more likely to spot fell runners than Bath chair passengers on the elegant Crescent.

Buxton Opera House anchors the cultural scene with year-round performances, while the Pavilion Gardens provide a proper Victorian park experience complete with bandstand and boating lake. The town centre wraps around these green spaces with independent shops and cafes that actually stay busy midweek - unusual for a Peak District settlement.

Heading out from town, you're immediately into some of the Peak District's finest limestone country. Parsley Hay makes an excellent starting point for the Tissington Trail, while the quieter paths around Cronkston Low offer cracking views without the weekend crowds. St Leonard's Church at nearby Monyash sits in one of those proper Derbyshire villages that time forgot.

The surrounding landscape shifts dramatically within a few miles. Ancient burial sites like Cronkston Low Bowl Barrow dot the high moors, while sheltered dales like Lathkill hide medieval field systems and crystal-clear streams. It's limestone country at its most dramatic - all dry stone walls, scattered farms like Pomeroy Farm, and that peculiar Peak District light that makes everything look sharper.

Buxton sits on the A515 with decent connections to Manchester and the M6. The train station links directly to Manchester, making it surprisingly accessible. Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you right in the heart of the White Peak, with both the industrial heritage around Cromford and the wilder moorland of Kinder Scout within easy reach.
