Roman walls still snake through the streets here, a reminder that this border city has been watching the Scottish frontier for nearly two millennia. Carlisle feels properly northern - there's a no-nonsense edge to the place that comes from centuries of raids, sieges, and cross-border scrapping.

The castle dominates the skyline, its red sandstone keep looking as formidable as ever. Worth the climb up for views across to the Lakeland fells on clear days. The cathedral's another must - smaller than you'd expect for a city this old, but the ceiling's stunning. What makes Carlisle special is its position. You're 10 minutes from proper Cumbrian countryside, with the Eden Valley rolling away to the east and the western lakes just a short drive south. The M74 runs straight up to Glasgow, making this a cracking base for Scottish adventures too.

Getting here's straightforward enough - the M6 runs right past, and there's a proper railway station with direct links to London. It's the biggest city for miles around, so you'll find everything you need.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You avoid city centre parking hassles while keeping easy access to both the historic attractions and that glorious Cumbrian landscape. Plus, you're ideally positioned for day trips - Hadrian's Wall, the Lake District, or even Edinburgh are all within striking distance.
