Peel Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees tower overhead as you wander into this proper woodland just outside Ambleside. The paths are well-defined but not overly manicured - expect a few muddy patches after rain and the occasional fallen branch to step over. It's the sort of place that feels genuinely wild without being intimidating.

Families with young children will find plenty to explore here. The woods are thick enough for hide-and-seek but open enough that you won't lose sight of wandering toddlers. Dog walkers love it too - there's space to let well-behaved dogs off the lead without worrying about livestock.

Expect to spend an hour or two here if you're taking it steady. The terrain is gentle enough for most ages, though proper walking boots are wise given the Lake District's tendency towards damp conditions. Early morning visits often reward you with birdsong and fewer crowds.

Peel Wood makes a lovely addition to a Lake District holiday, especially if you're staying at nearby Lakeside Retreat Glamping or one of the other parks around Ambleside. It's close enough for an easy morning walk but feels properly away from the tourist trails that can get busy around the lakes themselves. The kids will sleep well after scrambling about in here.
