Castle Crag

Volcanic rock juts dramatically from Borrowdale's floor in what feels like Lakeland's most unlikely summit. Castle Crag rises just 985 feet above sea level - barely a hill by Lake District standards - yet delivers one of the most rewarding short walks you'll find anywhere near Windermere.

The approach from Rosthwaite takes about 45 minutes through ancient woodland, past the quarry workings that once carved into this craggy outcrop. Don't let the modest height fool you - the final scramble up exposed rock faces feels properly adventurous, though nothing too technical for reasonably fit families with older children.

From the top, Borrowdale spreads out below like a perfectly composed postcard, with Derwentwater glinting in the distance and the high fells of Scafell Pike forming the backdrop. It's a cracking viewpoint that punches well above its weight.

Walkers staying at nearby holiday parks will find this makes an excellent half-day expedition. Parkdean's Limefitt Holiday Park sits just over two miles away, while White Cross Bay at Windermere offers easy access via the A591. The beauty of Castle Crag lies in its accessibility - you get proper Lake District drama without the slog of a full mountain day. Most people manage the round trip in under two hours, leaving plenty of time for cream tea in Rosthwaite afterwards.
